Special Education

Special Education

Palo Verde Unified School District is committed to identifying, locating, and assessing all students who may have disabilities and providing appropriate support and/or related services to those students determined eligible by an educational evaluation. We are dedicated to providing eligible students with disabilities a free and appropriate public education consistent with federal and state laws.  These services are provided based on the individual needs of the student. After a team, composed of educational professionals and the parent(s), determines a students’ unique needs and considers a variety of factors, an Individual Education Program (IEP) is created. An IEP is a legal document that provides services to a student with exceptional needs. Special Education support and services are provided under the  Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004).

Individual Education Plan (IEP)

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires the development of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for every student ages 3 - 22 who is eligible for special education and/or related services. The IEP must be reviewed at least annually and developed by a team comprised of one or both of the student's parents or a guardian, the student (when appropriate), a special education teacher, a general education teacher, related service providers (if applicable), all individuals who assess the student (if applicable), and one Local Education Area (LEA) Administrator. Other individuals who have knowledge or special expertise regarding the student may also attend at the discretion of the parent/guardian or the school district.Every three years, the student must be re-evaluated to determine continued eligibility for special education services.

Child Find Search and Serve

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) includes a Child Find mandate. Under the Child Find mandate, school districts are required to locate, identify, and evaluate ALL children with disabilities or suspected to have a disability from birth through age 21. The Child Find mandate applies to all children who reside within a State, including children who attend private schools and public schools, highly mobile children, migrant children, homeless children, and children who are wards of the State (20 U.S.C. 1412(a)(3)).
