The DOLPHINS program is a grant funded program through First 5 Riverside.

First 5 Riverside, the Riverside County Children & Families Commission, is a division of the Riverside County Department of Public Social Services. It is funded by tobacco taxes generated by Proposition 10, which passed in November 1998 to help make sure that all of our youngest Californians, from prenatal to 5 years old, get the best possible start in life. The statewide initiative added a 50-cent tax per pack of cigarettes and a comparable tax on other tobacco products.

First 5 Riverside’s vision is that all children in Riverside County are healthy and thrive in supportive, nurturing and loving environments, and enter school ready to learn and embrace lifelong learning.                    (http://www.rccfc.org/aboutus.htm)

Our local program focuses its services and education on Oral Health. Lessons are provided by the program throughout the year to each participating child care facility, preschool, and kindergarten classroom in the area of dental hygiene.  Family members are always welcome to observe or participate in our lessons or screenings.

“Tooth decay is the single most common chronic disease of childhood in the U.S. About 54 percent of kindergarteners in California have a history of dental decay.” (http://www.rccfc.org/aboutus.htm)

DOLPHINS dental program includes the following:

  • Oral health education for children and parents
  • A free dental screening with parental consent
  • Arrangement of dental appointments
  • Payment of dental treatments (if indicated)
  • Healthy Families/Medi-Cal application assistance by appointment
