Bilingual Educators Suceeding Together
Long-time PVUSD teacher, Sylvia Red-Smith, received a Bilingual Teachers Succeeding Together (BEST) award at a May 3 ceremony in Corona. The BEST Award is sponsored by the California Association of Bilingual Educators and is presented each year to educators that represent excellence in serving the needs of English learners.
Red-Smith came to the district in 1996 and since that time has served in a variety of assignments, including her current work with the English learners at Blythe Middle School and Palo Verde Valley High School.
Acting Superintendent Bob Bilek said that Red-Smith’s selection is a great choice, and he praised Red-Smith for the concern she shows all of the students, particularly those who are new to the United States. He said that some newcomer students arrive in Blythe with no English skills whatsoever, and that Red-Smith goes to great lengths to help these students and their families. Red-Smith provides the newcomers and other students with equitable access to opportunity, including the dream of someday attending college.
Bilek said that most of the newcomer students come from Mexico, however, the district also receives some from Asian and South American nations.
Bilek shared that some of the English learners, including those served by Red-Smith, go on to become some of the district’s highest achieving graduates.
“We have some excellent teachers in Blythe,” said Bilek, “and Sylvia is one of the most caring teachers I know. We are very proud of her selection for this prestigious award.”
