November Students of the Month

Sixth grade student Marie Smith and eighth grader Noelis Delfin Celaya were selected as Palo Verde Unified School District November Elementary and Secondary Students of the Month, respectively.

Smith attends Felix J. Appleby where she excels academically and is well-like by her peers who say she has a terrific sense of humor.

She achieved a perfect score of 600 on her California Standardized Tests (CST), and she serves as National Elementary Honor Society treasurer. Recently, Smith traveled with the People to People Ambassador Program to a four-day World Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C. in October.

A Kung Fu student for five years, Smith currently holds the purple sash, and has the record of being the youngest person to reach the level at the local martial arts school she attends. She also participated in the Young Americans program in early November where she learned and performed a dance routine for the community at Palo Verde College.

As though her schedule is not filled, she also takes piano lessons and plays softball.

The oldest child of Willie and Maria Gonzalez-Smith, Smith has one younger sister and two younger brothers.

“I am proud and honored to have Marie as our Elementary District Student of the Month,” said Appleby Principal Michael Yancey.

Noelia Delfin Celaya turned 14 years old in November. Born in Sonora, Mexico in 1999, the Blythe Middle School student has four siblings, Freddy 22, Berenice 19, Valeria 8 and Saul 6. .

After moving to the area from Quartzsite, Ariz. with her mother Elizabeth and stepfather Antonio, she has been at Palo Verde School District for the past three years.

In class on time, Delfin Celaya loves to read and focuses on her future. She plans on becoming a pop diva like her idol, the late Selena Perez, who was killed almost 20 years ago. If that doesn’t work out, Delfin Celaya wants to be a writer. “When her English teacher brought her name to the table for this great recognition, little did any of us know she was working on an anti-bullying video,” said BMS Principal Doug Ferber. “I popped the video in my computer and I became a bit overwhelmed at the work of this special 13 year-old.”

Delfin Celaya wrote, directed, and produced an anti-bullying video that was shown to the school during its Red Ribbon Week in October.

“I can’t say enough about Noelia,” said Ferber. “I am proud that she represents the Roadrunners and even more proud to introduce her as the District Student of the Month.”
