Appleby School Garden presents their 3rd Annual Farmer’s Market On Saturday, January 12, from 9-11 a.m. at 507 E. Hobsonway (across from Larry Green Ford).
The vegetables that will be available were all grown on the elementary school’s campus. The 800 seeds were planted on Sept. 20 with the seedlings placed in the ground on Oct. 27. Students kindergarten through sixth grade all participated in the school garden. Each grade has their own plot that they care for throughout the school year.
This year’s farmer’s market will consist of Swiss chard, collard greens, Romaine lettuce, Butter leaf lettuce, Red leaf lettuce, beets, arugula, green onions, spinach, broccoli, Bok Choy, sweet peas, cabbage, and more. The shopping experience at the Farmer’s Market will be aided by a sixth grader who will help each shopper with their shopping needs, from carrying the basket to bagging to carrying their purchased items to the vehicle.
All the proceeds made from the farmer’s market go back toward the school garden to be used in replenishing and purchasing seeds for the upcoming Spring harvest the school will plant. Also, funds are used to help with the regular costs that are incurred in maintaining the garden. Leftover vegetables will be served to the students in their daily meals.
The vegetables that will be sold on Saturday will be harvested on Friday at 1 p.m. at Appleby. The Appleby School Garden Committee is seeking volunteers to come and help out at that time, just check in at the office or call 760-922-7174 for more information.
